Area
3 BANQUET
November 1, 2003
The banquet was held for the second year at the Orion Restaurant and Banquet hall, located minutes from the show grounds in Palgrave. The Orion provided us with a very elegant set up, featuring a recessed dance floor and a stage for presenting awards. The door prizes brought in by members to reserve a table went over really well with fierce competition on the dance floor to win a prize! And new for this year, the silent auction tables were crowded with eager bidders trying to get the final bids in on their favorite items before the sheets were gone!
Once again we have to say a big “thank you” to a few of our volunteers who made this special night possible – Jackie Fisher and Joanne Black for taking on the huge task of co-ordinating the entire banquet. Jodi Mallette for doing a fantastic job on the awards, Carol Reeves, Sarah Black and Tausha Hellyer for helping Joanne and Jodi out with the Silent Auction.
Some comments from members on this year’s banquet:
What a night! We all had such a good time. Congratulations to you and your committee for another great banquet. I have looked over my awards this morning and I still can't quite relate to all that I accomplished this year but everything is terrific. I do not know how you do it but I hope the whole crew stays on and does it again next year.
Congratulations to the Area 3 banquet committee. We had a fantastic time and the awards were great!
Kudo’s to Jackie Fisher and Joanne Black for the banquet! I saw one of the trophy sheets on a horse at the barn today and it looked fantastic!
Each year two special awards are presented – the Linda Lambert memorial, Helping Hands Award (presented to an outstanding volunteer) and the Youth Achievement Award (presented to a youth who exemplifies both sportsmanship and horsemanship). These awards are kept a surprise until the night of the banquet. For those of you who were unable to attend the banquet, here are some excerpts from the program featuring our highlighted special award winners:
HELPING HANDS AWARD
This award is given in honour of one of our own very special members. LINDA
LAMBERT was an untiring volunteer of this club for many years. A carded WHAO
judge, ring steward, board member, and avid horse enthusiast, she was the active
wheel that kept the club turning. In 1999, while ring stewarding a horse show, a
lightening strike took her life. In her spirit of giving, the HELPING HANDS
award was established so that we may honour and recognize those special people
that do not ask for accolades or payback, Sundays off or overtime. They simply
do what needs to be done, and see the job through. This year’s winner was
selected by the board because of just such reasons. It is my pleasure to
acknowledge WENDY CAIRNCROSS as this year’s helping hands inductee.
YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Each year the Area 3 Board of Directors face a daunting task. To select a
youth member, who would be eligible to receive the YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. The
recipient of this award is someone who must exemplify both sportsmanship and
horsemanship. Someone who is not only an active exhibitor, but who can also be
counted on to offer personal time and effort to promote our great club through
extra club activities. This year’s youth achievement award recipient has been
carefully chosen for her exemplary qualities in both these areas. The strong
leadership skills were evident through her contribution to this year's Ontario
Youth Team Challenge event and as a volunteer at the Nancy Cahill Clinic. It
gives me great pleasure to introduce KRISTIN TUPLING as the Youth Achievement
Award recipient for 2003.
LEGACY AWARD Mare and foal statue
presented by Jean Walker on behalf of the Board of Directors
I am honored to be able to make this next presentation. The recipient has been a
fixture on the Area 3 board of directors for over 20 years. In fact she was part
of the very first board that sat around George Thompson’s kitchen table planning
the future of Area 3.
Of course I am talking about Dianne Howe. Not only was she part of that very first board of directors but she has been involved with every one since then. Not one other person can make that claim.
In the beginning there was a small group of rookies organizing and running the shows. Dianne has done everything from helping to organize the class lists, ordering awards and booking stalls to running the infamous Area 3 food booth. It was not uncommon for Dianne and Hilton to shop for the food then cook and serve it! In fact they even had to bring the booth!
Some of you may not be aware of the fact that Summerama started as a joint Area 3 and Area 4 venture. Then when Area 4 no longer wanted to continue with the show Dianne was part of the group that made sure that Summerama stayed in Area 3 and she has been part of the Summerama team every year since then. She works tirelessly to bring in the sponsorships that are required to make Summerama the showcase it is today.
This year Dianne turned her attentions to the Area 3 Futurity. When many of us wanted to give up on the futurity, Dianne fought to make sure it continued. She has always believed it is important to give something back to the Area 3 members for their support and that the futurity is an important part of that giving
On that note… we would like to give something back to Dianne. We, the Area 3 board of directors would like to recognize Dianne for all her years of tireless efforts on behalf of Area 3
