AMATEUR SPOTLIGHT... Lindie Blackwell by Lynn Riley

Lindie says, “To declare her 3 year old, Scotch Bay Time mare - Scotch With Mints (Racheal) was difficult in the beginning - would be an understatement.” Thankfully Racheal has changed so much in the year that Lindie has owned her. The pair showed in Open and Amateur Halter in 2007 and are looking forward to competing in riding classes this coming show season. Recently, Lindie enlisted the help of Lindsay Grice. With her assistance, Lindie is hoping to move forward with her riding and show in Novice Amateur Western Pleasure, Horsemanship and also Trail. She loves watching Junior Western Pleasure and hopes to compete in that class one day (although she suffers from anxiety just thinking about it).

Lindie started showing when she was about 12 years old. Her first horse was half Quarter Horse and half who knows. Her horse wasn't very pretty, but she taught Lindie a lot and like most young girls – she adored her first mount! Lindie started showing at schooling shows at the barn where she spent most of her time when she was young - Windy Hill Quarter Horses. They had shows once a month during the summer. As a kid, she couldn’t think of a better place to spend her summers. Lindie did not own a horse for many years, but her friend Kathleen Rusk convinced her to get back “in the saddle” – so to speak. Although rusty and dealing with a challenging horse – Lindie and Racheal had a great first show. At the Spring Classic in Orangeville this year, Racheal was the Reserve Champion Mare in open Halter Mares. When they were calling back the exhibitors for the grand and reserve class, Lindie didn't know what was going on as she had never competed in a halter class before. Not to mention, she was so nervous that she had no idea what her back number was. What an awesome way to start off the year! The pair showed at Orangeville and Palgrave this year and hope to try some of the Carp shows and Black’s. Racheal was the Area 3: Champion 3 Year Old Mare and OQHA: Champion 3 year Old Mare.

Lindie lives in Barrie with her boyfriend, Andrew and her 2 entertaining and hilarious dogs – a boxer named Lola and Mr. Chubbs, a boston terrier. She has been working at Three Small Rooms in Barrie, as a hairstylist for the last five years. She loves colouring and highlighting hair, creating and making people feel good. She has also been an educator for several hair styling lines which has given her the opportunity to travel and work with many amazing people. Lindie loves hair competitions. They can vary from timed crazy haircuts that you perform on a platform in front of tons of spectators to photo work that is submitted to a panel of judges. She loves the adrenaline rush...and the trophies. Lindie enjoys spending time with her friends and family AND of course her dogs. She likes staying at home and watching movies. Having horses really doesn't leave time for much else.

Lindie has many people who support and help her with her horse showing. She gives her friend and fellow amateur Kathleen Rusk A LOT of credit... She does SO MUCH for Lindie...from trailering her horse, keeping her organized, calming her down before her classes...you name it she does it. She could not even begin to explain how much she appreciates all of her help and friendship. She would also like to thank her parents for their endless faith in her, Andrew who is an amazing person and Doug for all that he does to help us at the shows! Without these people she says, “I would be lost.”

Have fun with your riding lessons and best of luck in 2008!!!
