Amateur Spotlight - Leah Longhouse by Sarah Black

Leah Longhouse lives in Barrie with her husband Chris and 11 year old daughter Taylor. Their household is complete with two Himalayan cats, Charm and Coco. Along with their newest addition Lola, and adorable Cavalier King Charles puppy that will be making its debut at OQHA shows this summer. Leah warns everyone that Lola’s “cuteness is infectious”.

Leah currently manages the Greenhawk Harness and Equestrian supplies in Barrie. She has been involved in the Greenhawk franchise for the past ten and half years.

Leah has been involved with horses since she was eight years old, when she began riding and competing on the hunter circuit. In 1996, Leah made the transition into the Quarter horse world with the purchase of a two year old filly Next Stars Matador. After learning together for two years, Leah purchased The Lasting Star.  This beautiful chestnut gelding hooked her into the Quarter horse world!

Leah took an eight year break from showing horses to focus on her family. She is very grateful to be back enjoying her passion with her family involved. Leah currently shows A Graceful Minute, aka Cowboy who is shared and loved by Leah and her daughter Taylor.  Cowboy was purchased as a Two year old, from Rick Skelly Ranch in Wisconsin. She is forever grateful for Ellen Jost who sold her such a wonderful horse. Together Leah has mostly shown Cowboy in Hunter Under Saddle events and a little Western Pleasure. Next year she hopes to add Horsemanship, Equitation, Halter and maybe “that showmanship thing” to their list of events. Leah admits to loving the western riding event and hoping one day to make a debut with Cowboy. Words cannot describe how grateful Leah is to have found such an amazing equine partner as Cowboy.  As a three year old, he trusted enough to pack Taylor around  at the age of nine, winning many classes and the OQHA reserve walk jog champion.

She looks forward to the 2011 show season as part of the Rapley Show Horses team. She is very excited to watch Taylor and Cowboy continue their show ring adventures together.

Leah has many great friends she would like to thank for their continuing support. Karen McDonald and Scott Joliffe for always being willing to lend a hand whether it be a trailer ride or a friends advice.  Jim Tunks who gave Cowboy a great start to his Career.  Jim and Barb Lockyer for their continuing support. But most importantly, her husband who is  a contender for the number one groom award. Even after accidentally being clocked in the head by “Blaze” while applying hoof black.

We wish the best of luck to the Longhouse team during the 2011 show season.
