Amateur Spotlight - Sherry Robitaille by
Lynn Riley
Sherry
is a familiar face at the Area 3 shows. She has been showing on
the Area 3 circuit for about 15 years. Her current mount is Mr
Inquisitive News (Sylvester), a black, 5 year old gelding by
Arent I Newsworthy. Sylvester is a homebred that Sherry helped
deliver, raise, break and train herself. Sherry is her own
coach and trainer – not always easy jobs – but, she finds it
very rewarding when she places in a class knowing she has done
all the work. She is always open to suggestions or help
though. Part of being coach and trainer is finding the right
horse – a challenge that Sherry has always enjoyed.
Prior
to joining the Area 3 circuit, she started her horse show career
in 1975 at fairs and club shows with a Percheron/Thoroughbred
cross named Smokey. Sherry says that Smokey was the kindest and
bravest horse and certainly had her hooked on horses. Many
horses later, including a wonderful quarter horse named Sonny
that helped Sherry win many high points and ribbons – Sherry
still loves to show and have fun with her horses.
Sherry’s favourite class is Showmanship and she was very pleased
to place first in Novice Amateur Showmanship at last year’s
Summer Circuit. Several years ago, Sherry won a Reserve High
Point with Winston her first Area 3 show horse which was also
rewarding. In addition to Showmanship, Sherry shows in Hunter
Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Pleasure and Western
Horsemanship.
A self-professed stay-at-home domestic
goddess, Sherry and her husband of 32 years, Rene`, live on a
hobby farm in Wyebridge. Rene` can fix or build anything and we
thank him for donating many of his woodworking crafts to Area
3. Over the years, Sherry has done odd jobs such as looking
after dog kennels, breeding and showing Dobermans and Beagles,
home cleaning and boarding horses – but training and showing
horse has always been her first love. Sherry and Rene` have a
daughter Jessica who many will remember from her showing days in
Youth and Novice Amateur classes. Jessica has retired from the
show ring, as she is busy as a police constable with York
Regional Police Services. Jessica says, her mother had a tough
time with her career choice, but she thanks her for her support.
Whenever possible though, Jessica gets to the shows to help put
the finishing touches on her mom before she enters the ring and
cheer her on. Sherry and Rene` have a very much loved 9 year
old Australian Shepherd named Shasha and Trooper a Scottish
Terrier, along with 2 cats.
Sherry would like to thank
her husband for looking after the horses, pony and cats while
she is at the horse shows and to Jessica for all of her help.
She would also like to thank her awesome friends for their
support. In addition, she appreciates the hard work of the Area
3 volunteers who help make the shows possible. Sherry is
looking forward to having fun at the shows in 2009 and it looks
like she has “snuck” into the Select classes this show season.
