Youth Spotlight - Rachel Gaboury by Elizabeth Willsey
Rachel Gaboury has always been around horses.  Even since she was little, she enjoyed riding, brushing, and spending time with these animals.  In fact, one of her most memorable moments was her first memory of seeing a horse.  Rachel remembers being three years old and looking up to see a horse for the first time.  Looking directly into its eyes, Rachel fell in love … She wanted to touch and hug the horse but her parents wouldn’t let her because she was so small.

It was at that moment … That Rachel’s love for horses began!

And, continued to grow, Rachel started riding at the Kelly Simpson Training Centre five years ago, and loves it!  Rachel was paired with her current mount, a beautiful chestnut mare by the name of “She Started It” – but around the barn she is known as Sheila.  Rachel competes in the Novice Youth and Youth 14-18 Horsemanship, Equitation, Western Pleasure, and Hunter Under Saddle.  The pattern classes, especially Equitation, are Rachel’s favourite classes to show.  Rachel’s goal for next year is to show trail.  I know Rachel and Sheila will reach their goal and succeed in the trail ring next year.  With their positive attitude, strong ability, and desire to learn, I know they will be an even more successful team next year in the trail ring.

Rachel is currently eighteen years old.  She completed high school at St. Dominic in Bracebridge, Ontario.  Rachel is taking a year off to work and is working with her Grandma at her clothing store.  Rachel has a passion for clothing, and it certainly is spectacular to see Rachel learning the ropes to the fashion industry under her grandmother’s guidance.  Rachel is looking forward to going to school for photography.  Her hope is to attend Algonquin College in Ottawa this fall.  In Rachel’s free time when she’s not riding, she enjoys her friends, listening to music, and expressing her creative talents.  Rachel loves to go to art galleries and is definitely the most artistic person I know.  She is talented at design, and I know that if she chooses a career in the creative arts, she will not only love her job, she will succeed as well.

Rachel would like to thank Kelly Simpson and Pat Chamberland for all their support and help with Sheila over the years.  Rachel would especially like to thank her parents.  They have always been there for her and she loves all the support they give her.  She could not be more thankful that they allow her to participate in a sport she loves so much!  Rachel would especially like to say that she appreciates all her mother does for her.  Both her mom and her love riding and they bought Sheila to share, but her mother has allowed Rachel to ride and show Sheila, while she helps and watches.  Rachel let me know that this really meant a lot to her; she couldn’t be more thankful.

Good luck next summer Rachel!  We look forward to seeing you in the trail ring, too!
