YOUTH SPOTLIGHT - Will Mathews by Sarah Black

William Mathews, or as his friends know him as 'Will', is one very familiar face in the show ring. Will lives in New Liskeard, Ontario, however he is currently a student in residence at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. He has been showing horses since he was 9 years old, and has been showing LB Triple Your Cash, barn name "LB" , since he was twelve. LB is a versatile 12 year old sorrel AQHA gelding that shows in western pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship, trail and western riding classes. Will says that his favourite class is trail and his favorite show is The All American Quarter Horse Congress. He has been training with Rick Fleetwood since 1995. His future goals for riding include working towards superiors in amateur events and to qualify for the world show in trail. Some of the very many past awards that Will has received include the following:

1996- High Point Novice Youth in Ontario
1996- 11th at the Congress in Novice Youth Equitation
1996 - ROM youth performance
1997- ROM open performance
1997-High Point 13 and under in Ontario
1997- Youth Superior in western pleasure and showmanship
1999-AQHA youth performance champion
1999- Youth Superior in horsemanship and trail
1999-Youth AQHA versatility award
1999- Open Superior trail
1999- Open Superior western pleasure (Pass Me a Shasta)
2000- Youth Superior western pleasure (Pass Me a Shasta)
2001- 10th at Congress in 15-18 trail.
2002- Open Superior western pleasure.

Along with having an outstanding amount of equine awards and having had represented Ontario at the Congress in the NYATT events every year (not including this) since 1996 Will, has also been able to accumulate many outstanding awards for his academic studies. He was awarded the Scotiabank Business Award, the Highest OAC Accounting Award and the Northern Telephone bursary for the highest marks for a student studying business at the university level in June 2002. He is currently a first year honours student (Economics). When school is completed Will hopes to work in the automotive field. Accomplishments aside, Will has been a well known face in the Quarter horse circuit for years as well as a strong competitor to look out for.
