Janet Dawson and Time An Time Again

…by Lynn Riley – Area 3 Member

2018 was a phenomenal year for Janet Dawson and her 3 year old, bay gelding – Time An Time Again (Remy) by Repeated In Red and out of a Hot Diggity Joe mare.

Remy came into Janet’s life after she sold her gelding Lazy Lopin Guy (Tyler) and was in search of a hunt seat horse that would be a good long-term prospect. She entrusted the help of her trainers, Suzanne Pickard and Jason Duquette (JS Quarter Horses) who had been instrumental in finding Tyler and provided the guidance that helped make the pair a winning team in the show ring. Suzanne worked diligently to find the next right horse for her client – talking to countless people, visiting farms, viewing videos, until that perfect partner was found for Janet.

After an extended search, finally they saw a video of a really nice coming three year old located in Pilot Point Texas that appeared to be that proverbial unicorn. Suzanne hopped on a plane to go and see him. She missed New Year’s celebrations with her family and was actually able to arrange for a vet check on New Year’s Day 2018. A few days later Remy was on his way to his new home in Canada with Janet and JS Quarter Horses!

The young gelding had a very busy show season in 2018 and demonstrated that he was everything that Suzanne, Jason and Janet had hoped when they saw that video of him in December 2017…

Remy had never been to an AQHA show until Suzanne took him to the Easter Eggstravaganza in Michigan in March 2018….and so the AQHA journey began.

Janet showed Remy in Select Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and Amateur Performance Geldings and Suzanne showed the gelding in Open Hunter Under Saddle. Remy and Janet made their show debut in freezing cold Hamburg, New York and had a great show. Suzanne showed Remy at the Tom Powers Futurity and placed 5th in the 3 year old Hunter Under Saddle class. Remy and the JS team attended most of the Ontario Quarter Horse shows culminating with the Ontario Breeders Futurity where Remy won the 3 year old Hunter Under Saddle class. Next stop was the Michigan Breeders Futurity where Remy won the Breeder Sponsored Futurity for 3 year old hunt seat horses. Suzanne took Remy to Syracuse where he performed well and then we all went to the Congress. Suzanne placed in the 3 Year Old Limited Pro Hunter Under Saddle and Janet was a finalist in the Select Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. Our final destination was the World Show in Oklahoma City. Suzanne placed in the top 10 in Open Limited Hunter Under Saddle and Janet showed in the Level 2 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle.

Janet says, “The World Show was an amazing experience and I encourage people who qualify to attend.” The venue was lovely and the atmosphere at the show was very laid back. There were lots of places to lunge and ride your horse so it was easy to prepare for your classes. The level of riding and the quality of the horses was outstanding. AQHA made the international exhibitors feel very welcome with a lounge set up exclusively for their use. There were several receptions for international participants and their families and guests. AQHA also hosted a free tour of Oklahoma City for international participants which gave Janet the opportunity to interact with riders from New Zealand, Sweden and Mexico. The stadium also had the flag of every country that was participating on display. She had the chance to watch the famous Dan Huss bridleless reining ride on Ms. Dreamy first hand which was truly breathtaking. She’d love to go on and on…the experience was that great!

What has made Remy such a super show partner? He has a great mind. He just wants to be a good boy and is such a pleasant and safe horse. No matter what happens he takes it in stride and doesn’t over react…Janet can always trust him. She says, “I love this horse!” One of his interesting character traits is that he loves to lie down and sleep. Janet had two stalls made into one at the Congress so he could stretch out and sleep. He took full advantage of the space. If you don’t see Remy in his stall don’t assume he is out and about. Look down! He is probably sleeping!

There isn’t one thing that stands out for Janet as a highlight for the 2018 show season. She had a great season with Remy. They improved together as the year went on and really bonded. The pair won the Area 3 and Ontario Champion in Select Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and were Top 5 overall in the Select Amateur Division in Ontario. Suzanne and Remy won Champion Junior Hunter Under Saddle in Ontario. With such a great start to their show career…..What does the future have in store for Remy and Janet? The focus of the 2019 show season will be preparing Remy for the Select World Show. It is being held in Fort Worth Texas for the first time and Janet is really looking forward to it. They also hope to eventually add Showmanship and Hunt Seat Equitation to their show repertoire.

Janet has a number of people she would like to thank for her great show season. First, she would like to thank her husband John and daughter Lindsay who are very supportive of her “horse habit” and always encourage her to give new challenges a try. She would like to thank Suzanne Pickard and Jason Duquette for all of their coaching and training. I would not have had the success I have had without them. She also owes her JS teammates a big thank you for being so supportive.
